Ba Kien’s house

Coming to Ha Nam, visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to discover Ba Kien’s house, an ancient house which was built over 100 years ago, the real house in "Chi Pheo" of Nam Cao. Through many years of ups and downs of history, the house has been dyed with ancient features, but that’s the reason why the house attracts the attention of many tourists from all over the world when they come to Ha Nam.
 

The house is located on an area of ​​​​about 900m2, in Dai Hoang village (Hoa Hau commune, Ly Nhan district, Ha Nam province), now called Vu Dai village.
It’s known that this house was formerly owned by Tran Duy Hanh, a famous rich merchant in the South Red River Delta. At the beginning of 1910, Tran Duy Hanh hired more than 20 talented carpenters in Ly Nhan palace to build, and it took nearly a year to complete.

Many people wonder if the character Ba Kien in "Chi Pheo" by Nam Cao is real? In fact, this character is completely real. The prototype of Ba Kien was Tran Huy Binh, Ba Binh - the puppet officer of Tonkin at that time. The person who bought the house of Mr. Tran Duy Cat (grandson of Mr. Hanh).

Ba Kien’s house is divided into three spaces, designed and built in accordance with the traditional style of the Northern Delta. The house includes 4 rows of columns, with a total of 16 ironwood columns. Each foot of the column is connected with boulders, the roof is covered with tiles. In particular, if you pay attention, you can see on the couches, trusses, and bowls carved a lot of sophisticated letters and dragons. Therefore, the house was considered one of the most prestigious houses in the locality at that time.
 
After going through 7 owners, in 2007, Ha Nam Provincial People's Committee decided to buy the house for 700 million VND from his wife Tran Huu Hoa and assigned it to the Culture and Information Department of Ly Nhan district to manage and preserve as a relic.
