Lanh Giang Temple: The Most Revered Ancient Temple in Ha Nam
No one knows exactly when the temple was built, only that it has existed for hundreds of years. It is dedicated to three generals (water gods) from the Hung Kings era, revered as Quan Lon De Tam, and the couple Princess Tien Dung and Chu Dong Tu.
The temple is not only a mysterious and sacred spiritual stop but also attracts visitors with its ancient, majestic, and grandiose beauty. The Tam Quan gate is built in the traditional Vietnamese style, with eight-layered roofs. The most striking features are the dragon head-shaped curved tips, interwoven with moon faces and stylized leaves. In front of the Tam Quan gate is a semicircular pond with clear water, adorned with bright red water lilies. In the middle of the pond stands a stupa connected to the temple gate by a bridge that disappears under the shade of an old banyan tree, creating a poetic scene. Lan Giang Temple is constructed in the "noi cong ngoai quoc" style, comprising three main buildings, 14 compartments, guest houses on both sides, worship towers, and a surrounding brick wall. Inside, there are many valuable and intricately carved worship items.
The Lanh Giang Temple Festival is held twice a year (June 18-25 and August 18-25 of the lunar calendar). The festival honors the contributions of the three water gods who assisted the Hung Kings and commemorates the merits of the couple Princess Tien Dung and Chu Dong Tu. The festival is held during this time because it coincides with the peak water season of the Red River, and the people hold the festival to seek the water gods' protection for a prosperous and happy life. The festival is rich in the cultural traditions of the Red River Delta, with rituals such as the offering ceremony, water procession, palanquin procession, worship ceremony, and boat racing.
Besides the ceremonial part, visitors to the Lanh Giang Temple festival can also enjoy numerous other interesting activities such as folk singing, lion and dragon dances, wrestling, human chess, and cockfighting.
