The Legend of General Dinh Nga

According to legend, in the 10th century, in Quang Thua Hamlet, now part of Tuong Linh Commune, Kim Bang District, a virtuous couple, Mr. Dinh Dien and Mrs. Tran Thi Nguy, gave birth to a son named Dinh Nga after years of childlessness. From a young age, Dinh Nga showed exceptional intelligence and talent, prompting his parents to provide him with the best education. His upbringing shaped him into a gifted individual, excelling in both academics and martial arts.

During the chaos of the Twelve Warlords Rebellion, Dinh Nga joined the forces of Dinh Bo Linh at Hoa Lu. Recognizing his talent, Dinh Bo Linh tasked Dinh Nga with returning to his homeland to establish military camps, recruit soldiers, and protect the Hoa Lu headquarters from afar. Using the strategic terrain of Mount Nguya, the young general built a formidable defensive line that played a pivotal role in the victory of the resistance forces. After unifying the country, Dinh Bo Linh ascended the throne and appointed Dinh Nga as Commander-in-Chief, assigning him to oversee the Thuy Loi region.

Despite his royal honors, Dinh Nga chose to retreat to his homeland, dedicating himself to improving the lives of his people. He encouraged land reclamation and established new villages, such as Thuy Loi Ha, Hoi Trung, and Trung Hoa, transforming the area into a prosperous and peaceful region. He passed away at Mount Kim Nhan, Nghe An, leaving a legacy of respect and admiration among the local people.

The Architecture of Ba Dan Temple
 

Ba Dan Temple is located on the land where Dinh Nga once built his military camp. With three sanctuaries, five front halls, and two auxiliary wings, the temple is nestled under the shade of ancient trees, exuding an aura of solemnity and antiquity. The inscriptions and couplets in the temple praise the contributions of the gifted general, including one that reads:

"The land of three villages united, the merit of General Dinh, the spirit shines upon Hoa Lu…"

A story about Ly Cong Uan receiving a divine vision from Dinh Nga’s spirit during his visit to the temple adds to its mystique. After becoming emperor, Ly Cong Uan returned to the temple, bestowing a royal title upon Dinh Nga as "Nga Cong Hien Linh Dai Vuong Thuong Dang Phuc Than."
