Bau Market – From a Centuries-Old Village Market to the Most Bustling Shopping Hub in Ha Nam
Nestled in the heart of Phu Ly city, Bau Market (also known as Phu Ly Market) serves not only as a vibrant trading place but also as a silent witness to centuries of historical evolution. Once a humble village market in Bau hamlet, it has transformed into the most dynamic commercial center in Ha Nam Province—blending modern rhythms with nostalgic cultural memories and meeting the shopping, leisure, and cultural discovery needs of both locals and visitors.
A Glimpse into the Past
Bau Market originated from a modest village fair. Over time, it became increasingly lively, eventually developing into a significant trading center during the 1930s and 1940s. Thanks to its strategic location near National Highway 1A and its diverse array of goods, the market drew traders from neighboring provinces such as Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh.
In Vietnamese folklore, the market appears in the traditional verse:
"Let’s meet at Bau Market fair –
With lime from So Kien and betel to share."
This highlights the market’s role not only as a trading hub but also as a cultural and social gathering point.

In the past, the market was also known as Phu Ly Market or Tran Market. However, in 2017, the name "Bau Market" was officially restored to preserve its historical and cultural values. This change not only honored tradition but also reaffirmed the market’s symbolic place in Phu Ly’s urban development.
A Modern Facelift
After several relocations and a period of inactivity, Bau Market was revitalized in 2017 with a brand-new complex on Le Loi Street, Minh Khai Ward, close to National Highway 1A. Since then, the market has not only reclaimed its traditional name but also emerged as a modern shopping destination—spacious, well-structured, and among the best-equipped in Ha Nam.

Operating daily from 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Bau Market also features a unique early morning wholesale session from 1:30 to around 5:00 a.m., focusing on agricultural products, vegetables, and dried goods. This lively scene draws wholesalers and culture-loving tourists alike.
Smart Zoning with Three Key Areas
With over 1,000 kiosks across three zones—A, B, and C—Bau Market is now a model of organized and diversified retailing:
- Zone A: Offers essential goods like fresh food, vegetables, and household items at affordable prices.
- Zone B: Spanning three floors. The first floor houses general goods, stationery, shoes, and fruits; the second floor is dedicated to fashion and premium cosmetics; the third floor includes gym facilities, spas, and wellness services.
- Zone C: A five-story building where the top three floors serve as a large parking area, catering to both car and motorbike users.
A Cultural and Touristic Destination
Beyond its commercial appeal, Bau Market contributes greatly to shaping Phu Ly's cultural and tourism landscape. Visitors can sample regional specialties rich in Ha Nam’s culinary heritage—such as Đại Hoàng honey bananas, clay-pot braised fish, sesame rice crackers, and Bình Lục fermented shrimp paste.

A short walk from the market leads to Bau Pagoda (Thien Bao Tu), a thousand-year-old temple standing gracefully on Nguyen Van Troi Street. After a recent renovation across a 4,000-square-meter campus, the pagoda now reflects a blend of timeless tradition and contemporary design. According to ancient records, the temple sits atop a raised mound surrounded by water—a site with auspicious feng shui. The Chinese name “Biều” signifies “a land that rises above the water,” symbolizing resilience and prominence.

Together, the bustling Bau Market and the serene Bau Pagoda form a unique cultural ensemble—an irresistible destination for those intrigued by local history, heritage, and spiritual life.
Today, a visit to Bau Market in Phu Ly offers more than just shopping—whether it’s clothing, shoes, cosmetics, or regional delicacies.
